Best-Selling Historical Mystery Author

Jonathan F. Putnam.

Jonathan’s Lincoln and Speed historical mystery series has been a critical and commercial success.  Pulitzer Prize-winning Lincoln scholar Doris Kearns Goodwin called it, “Splendid … one of the most enjoyable works of fiction I have read in a long time."  MyShelf called Final Resting Place, "a historical masterpiece." Historical Novels Review called These Honored Dead “wonderful historical fiction” and Perish from the Earth “well-plotted, compelling and exceptional.” Publishers Weekly praised These Honored Dead in a starred review.  Shelf Pleasures called Perish from the Earth, “One of the best books I have read in a long time. I can’t recommend it highly enough… I’m certain you will be captivated by its raw and honest look at this part of American history and by the beauty of the language used to portray the people, both real and imaginary.” Jonathan has been featured by such media outlets as Fox-TV.  He was chosen to narrate an episode on the young Lincoln for the popular “10 American Presidents” podcast series.  He has given talks about Lincoln for bookstores, civic groups, libraries, and lawyer groups all around the country.

Jonathan will be the third author to appear in our new Literary Lunchbox Series in conjunction with the Sanibel Community House. This series features a variety of best-selling, nationally known authors discussing their books, writing careers and in Jonathan’s case, his extensive research into the relationship between Abraham Lincoln and Joshua Speed. Tickets are $25 each and include a copy of Final Resting Place, the latest Lincoln and Speedy Historical Novel (paperback $15.99) and a boxed lunch provided by the Sanibel Deli and Coffee Factory. Discussion will be followed by an opportunity to have your book personalized. Tickets can be purchased at MacIntosh Books and Paper or by calling 239-472-1447.

James Anderson was born in Seattle and raised in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. He is a graduate of Reed College in Portland, Oregon, and received his Master’s Degree in Creative Writing from Pine Manor College in Boston. For many years he worked in book publishing. Other jobs have included logging, commercial fishing and, briefly, truck driver. He currently divides his time between Ashland, Oregon, and the Four Corners region of the American Southwest.

About Lullaby Road-

Winter has come to Route 117, a remote road through the high desert of Utah trafficked only by eccentrics, fugitives, and those looking to escape the world. Local truck driver Ben Jones, still in mourning over a heartbreaking loss, is just trying to get through another season of treacherous roads and sudden snowfall without an accident. But then he finds a mute Hispanic child who has been abandoned at a seedy truck stop along his route, far from civilization and bearing a note that simply reads “Please Ben. Watch my son. His name is Juan” And then at the bottom, a few more hastily scribbled words. “Bad Trouble. Tell no one.”.
Despite deep misgivings, and without any hint of who this child is or the grave danger he’s facing, Ben takes the child with him in his truck and sets out into an environment that is as dangerous as it is beautiful and silent. From that moment forward, nothing will ever be the same. Not for Ben. Not for the child. And not for anyone along the seemingly empty stretch of road known as Route 117.

Praise for Lullaby Road-

“…a delicious cast of colorful characters…Lullaby Road is a triumphant mix of landscape, character, wit and sagacity wrapped in a noir thriller.” -Shelf Awareness

“Atmospheric…Arresting desert vistas and distinctive characters leave a lasting impression.” —-Publishers Weekly

“The action is nonstop, and the plot twists are heart-pounding.  Anderson’s vivid prose gives a sense of vastness that is the desert he so brilliantly describes – it is an amazing use of language to create a mood and feeling…Fans of Anderson’s first installment of this series will devour this book and long for another visit with the residents along Route 117.” -Library Journal

In celebration of the upcoming 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote, Vision 2020 is working, along with many partners including the League of Women Voters, to complete the unfinished business of economic, political and social equality for women.

They have 4 goals in their vision:

  • 50/50 shared leadership in business and government,
  • civic engagement to encourage every eligible woman to vote in 2020,
  • economic parity for women,
